The Zarley Law Firm was founded by Donald H. Zarley. Don enjoyed a career that spanned nearly 50 years. He was a consummate Iowan – devoted to family and church, a leader in his profession and community and ever a man of grace, humility and generosity. He never forgot his roots or his manners.

Drawing on rich experiences and a wonderful childhood in Johnston, Iowa, Don began his legal career in 1954, and by the age of 31, he had tried more cases than any other patent attorney in the state of Iowa. Over his career, having prosecuted more than 3,000 patent applications, Don developed an approach that he shared with all, either as an adjunct professor at Drake University, or as a mentor to aspiring associates. More importantly, he provided an example of how to treat people – with honesty, fairness and kindness.

As the managing partner of his firm, Don played a significant part in the establishment of intellectual property law in the United States. Over those many years, Don earned the respect and trust of hundreds of clients both here and abroad. He was regarded as a leading authority on patent law, being called upon many times to serve as an expert witness.

From Don’s example, his hard work and dedication, we have learned that kindness, calmness and fairness are not signs of weakness, but a reflection of confidence in one’s values. Our firm was created based on these ideals.

In the twilight of his career, with the help of his son Tim and key staff members, Don established a firm that reflects his original vision and values. With truckloads of files from all of his respected clients, Don moved his team to their new location in the Capital Square building.

Over the years, the firm has grown by adding members that share Don’s work ethic and morals. We care about our clients, respect one another and enjoy our practice. We are dedicated to carrying on the tradition that Don established. After all, he was the oak from which all the acorns have fallen.
